Researchers from Christ College, Irinjalakuda's Department of Zoology, found a new species of spider from Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and a new species of millipede from the University of Calicut's Tenhipalam campus.
Tholpettyensis Carrhotus
This new spider species was discovered in the damp deciduous forest of the Tholpetty range nature reserve in the Western Ghats. It is a nocturnal jumping spider that hides behind foliage during the day. It only appears throughout the night to feed. There are now 287 species of jumping spiders documented from India.
Carrhotus tholpettyensis Characteristics
The female is 6 mm long, while the male is 5 mm long. Both male and female athletes have dark bodies with scattered white patches and markings. Males and females both have white crescent markings on their heads and abdomens. The eyes are covered with orange scales.
Spider Species Naming
The spider species was named after the woodland range Tholpetty, where it was discovered.
The researchers also identified a new species of millipede on the Calicut University campus. Delarthrum anomalans is the name given to this new species. It is a member of the Paradoxosomatidae family. Male species may grow to be up to 17 mm long, while females can grow to be up to 15 mm long. It has a glossy black body with a light-yellow ventral side. The body is made up of 20 segments and 52 legs. They reside beneath the leaf litter. During the dry season, they hide beneath the earth and only emerge during the wet season. 275 millipede species have been documented from India to date.
