Description

The Rafale fighter jet's marine variant was recently tested aboard the INS Vikrant. The test carried out from the aircraft carrier went well.

Concerning the Test

The test was carried out to ensure that the Rafale fighter could take off from an aircraft carrier. It was a huge success, a catapult launch is used to launch the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. The jets also behaved admirably during the launch.

What is a catapult launch, exactly?

A catapult is a mechanism that allows a plane to take off in a confined space. It's a sort of aided take-off, it provides the flight more inertia, the energy for conventional runway flights comes from a fast, steady lengthy run. In an aircraft carrier, such a lengthy run is not practicable, necessitating a catapult launch.

How does a Catapult launch work?

In about 2 to 3 seconds, the catapult accelerates the aeroplane from 0 to 165 knots. The accumulators capture high-pressure steam in this system, this steam comes from nuclear power plants. The accumulators' valves are shut off after the necessary steam pressure is reached, and the catapult is ready to fire. A shuttle is part of the catapult launch mechanism. Through this shuttle, the aircraft is connected to the carrier. In the catapult, there are two pistons. The aeroplane is held together by these pistons. The steam in the accumulator is released when the time comes. The piston is pushed forward, and the catapult is released. A push is given to the flight, it develops inertia.

The other launch is STOBAR

The STOBAR, in addition to catapult launch, is a well-known launching mechanism. Russia and China are the two countries that utilise it the most. STOBARs are also widespread in India, as the country once relied heavily on Russia for its defence systems, however, India is expanding its defence trade, particularly with the United States and Israel. As a result, only a few new aircraft carriers feature catapult launches.

What is the definition of assisted take-off?

It's a mechanism that makes it easier for planes to take to the air and take off. It is employed when the aircraft's weight exceeds the maximum take-off weight, the runway is too short, or the power is insufficient.
