On February 1, 2022, the Indian Coast Guard will commemorate its 46th Raising Day.
The Indian Coast Guard, being the world's fourth biggest coast guard, has played a critical role in safeguarding Indian coastlines and implementing rules in India's Maritime Zones.
The Indian Coast Guard was originally constituted on February 1, 1977, by the Indian Parliament's Coast Guard Act, 1978. It is overseen by the Ministry of Defense.
ICG has developed from a small force with just 07 surface platforms in 1978 to a powerful force with 158 ships and 70 aircraft in its inventory By 2025.
It is expected to reach its objective force levels of 200 surface platforms and 80 aircraft.
One of the Indian Coast Guard's main responsibilities is to combat smuggling through marine channels under its jurisdiction.
It has captured narcotics and contraband worth about four thousand crore rupees in the last year.
Indian Coast Guard
The Indian government has created a three-layered method to secure the coastlines. The Indian Navy patrols the high seas and conducts aerial surveillance using ship-based aircraft in the outermost layer. The Coast Guard patrols the intermediate layer of the Exclusive Economic Zone (between 12 and 200 nautical miles). The Coastal Police guard the region along the land-sea interface.
Challenges:
The grandeur of India's maritime domain, along with its unique topography and the shift in global maritime attention from the Atlantic-Pacific axis to the Indo-Pacific continuum, has posed various security difficulties. These problems encompass a wide spectrum of classic and non-traditional hazards.
