Description

Researchers from West Bengal's Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Sciences have developed a novel approach for detecting oral cancers.

Concerning the new technology

It distinguishes between malignant and precancerous phases. High-standard biopsy results are used to differentiate the cases.

A novel imaging equipment has been developed by the team, by monitoring the blood flow rate in the tissues, the instrument determines the malignant stage.

A blood perfusion imager is the gadget, a humidity sensor, an infrared camera, and a software engine are all used. The software engine is electrically controlled.

Technology's  requirement

Cancer affects around a quarter of the female population, in India, oral cancer is also the most frequent kind among men, Oral malignancies account for more than 11.28 percent of all cancers, in socially disadvantaged populations, oral cancer is one of the most prevalent causes of illness. If caught early enough, there is a probability of a five-year survival rate, the survival rate declines to 65 percent as the disease progresses.

Technology's advantages

Oral cancer in its advanced stages is easily detectable, the gadget will set you back $500. This might be made available in remote community health centres. Because of tobacco, India has a high rate of mouth cancer.

In India, tobacco chewing is responsible for 80% of mouth malignancies, Oral cancer has been more common among young adults and women in the recent decade.

Working

Sensors and controls are included in the gadget. These components capture biological data, which is input into a computer-simulated software engine. The engine distinguishes between cases that are pre-cancerous and those that are cancerous.

The Indian government's efforts

In India, around 60% of oral malignancies are treatable if identified early. The Indian government has established a National Cancer Control Program. Regional cancer centres have been established as part of the initiative.

The National Programme for the Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke (NPCDCS) is the acronym for the National Programme for the Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke.

The programme focuses on community-level follow-up as well as screening, diagnosing, and addressing the risk factors involved.
