He died after a protracted illness, according to the hospital where he was being treated. On December 24, 2021, Debnath was admitted to a private hospital and placed on ventilator support.
In 2021, Narayan Debnath received the Padma Shree award. While he was getting treatment, the West Bengal government presented him with the country's fourth highest civilian honour. In 2013, the popular cartoonist was also honoured with the Bangabibhsuan Award and the Sahitya Akademi Award.

Narayan Debnath's childhood and introduction to comics
1. Narayan Debnath's family originated in Bikrampur, Bangladesh, but moved to Shibpur before he was born.
2. Debnath has always been interested in the visual arts. He studied fine arts at the Indian Art College for five years during World War 2, but did not complete his degree and instead dropped out in his final year.
3. For the following five years, Narayan Debnath worked as a freelancer for advertising companies, designing the movie logo and presentations.
4. Between 1950 and 1961, Debnath illustrated a variety of children's publications, including adventure stories and translations of Western classics. His career in comics began in 1962 with Shuktara's Handa-Bhonda.
5. The editors at Dev Sahitya Kutir suggested that I work in Bengali comic books. Narayan Debnath was familiar with international comics, but Bengali comics had yet to gain traction.
6. Handa-Bhonda, first published in 1962, was an instant hit and is now published every month in Shuktara. Debnath pencilled and inked Handa Bhonda at first, with no coloured frames.
7. Debnath's first coloured comic figures were for the 'Bantul the Great' comic strip and book. As the May-June 1965 edition of the monthly children's periodical 'Shuktara,' the comics had their debut appearance in comic strips.

Apart from Bantul the Great, Narayan Debnath also illustrated Rabi Chobi (1961). It was written by Bimal Ghosh on Rabindranath Tagore's childhood.
Debnath's Rajar Raja/Chobite Vivekananda, published in 1962, reproduced Swami Vivekananda's life and times, while his Chitre Durgeshnandini, published in 1962, used graphic novel methods to reimagine Bankim Chattopadhyay's work Dugeshnandini.
Handa Bhonda, Shootki or Mootki, Nonte Phonte by Narayan Debnath, on the other hand, transformed the comedy genre in Bengal.
