IMF Chief Economist 2022: On January 11, 2022, the International Monetary Fund announced the appointment of Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas as its next Chief Economist. Gita Gopinath, who will join the IMF management team in January 2022, will be replaced as Chief Economist by a French-born economist from the University of California-Berkley.
Gourinchas will begin part-time work as the IMF's Chief Economist on January 24 and will transition to full-time employment on April 1, 2022, according to the International Monetary Fund. Gourinchas will also be the Director of the IMF's Research Department as an Economic Counsellor.

1. Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, a French national, graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique with a degree in Physics. He graduated from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Sciences Sociales with a master's degree in Economics.
2. The IMF's new Chief Economist has a master's degree in engineering from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts ET Chaussees.
3. In 1996, Gourinchas travelled to the United States to pursue his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, after finishing his Master's degree in France (MIT).
4. Beginning in 1998, he taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Princeton University, where he remained until 2003.
5. Gourinchas then became an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at the University of California at Berkley, where he has worked for over 15 years. He is now the faculty director of the Clausen Centre for International Business at UC Berkeley.
6. He was a member of the French Prime Minister's Council of Economic Advisors from 2012 to 2013.
7. Throughout his illustrious career as an economist, Gourinchas has received several prizes and accolades. The Bernacer Prize for the Best European Economist under 40 working in Macroeconomics and Finance was awarded in 2007.
Association with the International Monetary Fund
In 2009, while working as a professor at the University of California, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas began working as a visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He also became the editor of the IMF Economic Review, the fund's main research magazine.
Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas is credited with broadening the magazine's appeal among economic officials and the general public. He worked for Fund in this capacity till 2016.
IMF First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath
In January 2022, Gita Gopinath, the former and first female Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund, will start her new job as the First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF.
Her nomination as the IMF's second-ranking official was publicised because to her broad policy responsibilities, which include directing IMF surveillance, flagship, and research. Gopinath will take over as First Deputy Managing Director from Geoffrey Okamoto. He was a former Treasury official in the Trump administration.
