Every year on January 11th, India commemorates the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, who died in Tashkent on this date in 1966. (Present day Uzbekistan). The successor to Jawaharlal Nehru, India's second Prime Minister was noted for his humble lifestyle and honesty. Shastri was also awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously, making him the first posthumous recipient of the award.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was a devout devotee of Mahatma Gandhi who rose through the ranks of the Indian government to reach important positions. Lal Bahadur Shastri, a former Home Minister of Independent India, became Prime Minister on June 9, 1964, following the death of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, India's second Prime Minister, died on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent, which is now part of Uzbekistan.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was India's second Prime Minister after independence.

Following the death of Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri became India's second Prime Minister.

As Prime Minister, Shastri is recognised for pushing the White Revolution, a nationwide campaign to increase mil production, as well as the Green Revolution, which increased food grain production. The motto 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' was also coined by Lal Bahadur Shastri. He commanded India throughout its war with Pakistan in 1965, which ended on January 10, 1966, with the Tashkent accord. He died of a heart attack on January 11 in Tashkent, and the reason of his death is still under investigation.

1. Lal Bahadur Shastri was born in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, on October 2, 1904. When Shastri was just a year and a half old, his father died.

2. When Lal Bahadur Shastri heard Mahatma Gandhi's message and joined the Non-Cooperation Movement, he was just 16 years old.

3. During India's Independence Movement, Shastri played an important part in the country's liberation battle and was even imprisoned by the British for seven years.

4. After gaining independence from the British in 1946, Lal Bahadur Shastri was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary of Uttar Pradesh by the Congress Government. During his time as India's Railway Minister, a train disaster claimed the lives of many people. After the incident, he resigned from his position.

5. Following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri became India's second Prime Minister. On January 11, 1966, he died in Tashkent.
