The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, developed and funds the KVPY programme, which is a national-level fellowship programme. Students are chosen based on their performance in an aptitude test as well as an interview.
On the basis of the aptitude test results, the first merit list is created, and these students are then invited for an interview, then the selection procedure is vetted by IISc-created groups or committees. The final merit is calculated using the results of both the aptitude exam and the interview and those chosen for the KVPY fellowship get scholarships up to the pre-doctoral level.
