The theme of World Maritime Day 2021 declared by IMO is “Seafarers: at the core of Shipping’s future”. The IMO theme aims to increase the visibility of seafarers by emphasizing the important role that they currently play and will continue to play in the near future.
The history of World Maritime Day
In 1948, an international conference in Geneva had passed a convention that established the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It is a United Nations specialized agency that maintains and develops a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping.
The IMO first observed World Maritime Day on March 17, 1978. IMO took the name Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organisation (IMCO) in 1982. The Maritime Organization's main goal is to focus on environmental issues, safety, technical cooperation, legal issues, maritime efficiency, and maritime safety.
The significance of World Maritime Day
The World Maritime Day in 2021 will be observed as a year of action for seafarers who have faced hardships as a result of COVID-19, despite playing an important role as key workers in the global supply chain. The focus on seafarers has become more important as the pandemic has put extraordinary demands on them, with hundreds of thousands of men and women stranded on ships for months and unable to be repatriated due to national-level restrictions.
In 2021, World Maritime Day will focus on a variety of other issues related to the human element of shipping, such as the well-being of seafarers, the safety and security of life on board ships, and the importance of ensuring a qualified and trained workforce.
