The fisheries department of Sikkim has announced that the Sikkim Government has designated 'Copper Mahseer,' also known locally as 'Katley,' as the state fish. The decision to designate Kately as the State Fish was made to highlight the importance of the fish and to emphasize conservation efforts. Katley Fish has a high market value in Sikkim and is also popular among the locals.

Katley fish, also known as ‘Copper Mahseer' in Sikkim, can be found at various altitudes throughout the state, but is most commonly found in the Teesta and Rangit rivers and their tributaries. Katley is a dominant fish species in Sikkim's Teesta River, which flows from the northern glaciers.
The Additional Director of the Directorate of Fisheries, C S rai informed that ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR), in 1992, had declared Katley Fish as an endangered species. Later in 2014, the International Union for Conservation for Nature (IUCN) also categorized fish as an endangered species.
Apart from India, Katley Fish is also found in countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, China, Bhutan, Vietnam, and Pakistan. Katley Fish can grow up to around 120 cm and can also weigh over 10 kg.
