As part of the government's Digital Agriculture Mission to create a Unified Farmers Service Interface, the central government has begun generating 12-digit unique IDs for farmers. The unique ID will make it easier to access all farm-related services from various agricultural schemes and credit facilities. The IDs will also help the federal and state governments plan more effectively.
So far, the national Farmers Database has been prepared, with information on 5.5 crore farmers from 11 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. The remaining states will be covered in the coming months, including Kerala, Telangana, and Punjab. Once the database of 8 crore farmers is complete, the unique IDs will be released.
Digital Agriculture Mission
The government launched a Digital Agriculture Mission for 2021-2025 on September 14, 2021, for projects based on new technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, GIS technology, remote sensing, drone use, and so on.
In accordance with the Digital Agriculture Mission, the government recognized the importance of agriculture digitization on September 6, 2021. As a result, the government established a centralized Farmers Database, which will be linked by land records from farmers across India. Each farmer will be assigned a distinct Farmer ID.
On September 14, 2021, the Agriculture Ministry signed a Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) for pilot projects with Ninjacart, CISCO, Jio Platforms Limited, NCDEX e-markets Limited (NeML), and ITC Limited. MoUs were signed to infuse new technologies so that farmers can make informed decisions about whether to sell their produce, when to sell it, where to sell it and at what price to increase their income.
National Farmers Database
The government is building a National Farmers Database with information on 8 crore farmers in India for better planning, monitoring, policy formulation, strategy formulation, and scheme implementation. The Farmers Database will be linked to each farmer's land records. The Database will aid in the issuance of health cards, precision farming, the distribution of crop advisories to farmers, the issuance of smart cards for farmers, the facilitation of e-governance, the settlement of compensation such as claims, crop insurance, the grant of agriculture subsidies, and other activities.
