Description

India took part in the sixth edition of the multi-nation counter-terrorism exercise in Russia's Orenburg region. The exercise is being held under the aegis of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The Indian Army announced that it has sent a team of 200 personnel to the sixth edition of 'Exercise Peaceful Mission,' which will take place from September 13 to September 25, 2021. The SCO is an eight-member economic and security bloc that has emerged as one of the largest transregional international organizations. In 2017, both India and Pakistan were admitted as permanent members of the SCO.

Significance

As per the Indian Army, the goal of the SCO military exercise is to foster close relations among SCO member states. The exercise also aims to improve military leaders' abilities to command multi-national military contingents. According to the Indian Army, the SCO military exercise will allow the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's armed forces to share the best military practices. It will also give the Armed Forces the opportunity to train in counter-terrorism operations in an urban scenario in a multination and joint environment. The scope of the military exercise includes a mutual understanding of drills and procedures, professional interaction, control structures, joint command establishment, and the elimination of terrorist threats.

About Peaceful Mission Exercise

The joint counter-terrorism exercise ‘Peaceful Mission' is a Multilateral Exercise that is held biennially as part of the military diplomacy between the members of the SCO. The Peaceful Mission Exercise has also been described as a watershed moment in military interactions and global counter-terrorism cooperation.
