Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has directed more than 700 affiliated colleges to lower tuition fees for the current academic year. The move came after students demanded lower tuition fees due to the COVID-19 pandemic and higher education department directives.
The university has decided to provide a 100 percent fee waiver for all those students who have lost one or both parents to COVID-19. Since colleges charge fees across multiple lines, the notice provided a detailed breakdown of fees that should be reduced by what percentage.
While tuition fees have remained intact, other fees that have been canceled 100% are college magazine fees, factory visit fees, deposits such as cash dues, library or other deposits, section fees such like medical examinations, disaster management, Ashwamed (competition) fees. In addition, the university made it possible to reduce fees by 50% for such facilities as a library, laboratory, gym, computer, and extracurricular activities. There will also be a 75 percent cut in student welfare fees and a 25 percent cut in exam fees and development funds.
The SPPU administration made a proposal for a fee reduction before its governing board during a meeting held on June 26th. The committee was created under the chairmanship of Director Sudhakar Jadhavar. The committee recently presented its report, which was accepted by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Nitin Karmalkar.
SPPU has instructed affiliated colleges to lower tuition fees for the current academic year only, and even to pay the reduced fees, colleges or educational institutions must provide installment options to poor and needy students upon receipt of their written applications. Colleges that have already published an online magazine can charge 25 percent and those who print magazines 50 percent of the magazine fee, while those who did not print should not charge anything. Likewise, colleges that run extracurricular activities online may charge a 50 percent fee for them.
Colleges have also been instructed to charge dorm / accommodation fees only after they open. The notice also said that, if optimistic, colleges reopen to physical education, then the prorated component of fees under various clauses, as already mentioned, including dorm fees, may be charged separately.
