Description

On August 16, 2021, Google paid tribute to Indian activist, freedom fighter, and poet Subhadra Kumari Chauhan on the occasion of her 117th birthday with Creative Doodle. Google Doodle was illustrated by New Zealand-based artist Prabha Mallya. The doodle depicts Chauhan, wearing a sari, seated with a pen with a few notes. The picture also shows Jhansi Ki Rani and the freedom fighters. In a statement, Google described Chauhan as an "innovative writer and freedom fighter" who rose to prominence in the country in an era when literature was dominated by men.

About Subhadra Kumari Chauhan

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was an Indian activist, freedom fighter, and poet whose work received national acclaim during a time when literature was controlled by men. On August 16, 1904, Chauhan was born in the village of Nihalpur in Uttar Pradesh. When she was nine years old, her first poem was published. The poem "Jhansi ki Rani" by Chauhan is one of the most popular poems in Hindi literature. Among her many notable poems are ‘Balika ka Parichay' and ‘Khilonewala.' Her poetry and prose, according to Google, were mostly focused on the struggles of Indian women, such as caste and gender oppression.

Chauhan became a member of the Indian Nationalist Movement in 1921 as a result of her steadfast nationalism, and she utilized her poems to encourage people to join the struggle for their country. Chauhan was the first woman satyagrahi, a member of an Indian collective of nonviolent anti-colonialists, to be arrested during the independence struggle in 1923.

Google further stated that during the struggle for India's independence in the 1940s, she wrote a total of 88 poems and 46 short tales. ‘Jallianwala Bagh Mein Vasant,' ‘Veeron Ka Kaisa Ho Basant,' ‘Rakhi Ki Chunauti,' and ‘Vida' are among Chauhan's other works. She died in a car accident in 1948.
