Description

The Parsi New Year is a regional festival that takes place on the first day of Farvardin, the Zoroastrian calendar's first month. The celebration is also known as Navroz, which comes from the Persian terms Nav and Roz, which mean "New Day." Every year, around March 21, Parsi New Year celebrations take place around the Spring Equinox.

The Shahenshahi Calendar, which does not account for leap years, is followed by the Parsi Community in India; hence the Navroz festival has been moved back 200 days from its original date of the Spring Equinox. The Parsi New Year is observed throughout India in the months of July and August. On August 16, 2021, India will celebrate Navroz 2021.

History of Parsi New Year

Parsis follow Zoroastrianism, one of the first known monotheistic faiths. The faith was founded 3,500 years ago in ancient Iran by the prophet Zarathustra. From 650 BCE until the emergence of Islam in the 7th century, Zoroastrianism was the official religion of Persia (now Iran). For nearly 1,000 years, it was also one of the most important faiths in the ancient world When Islamic soldiers invaded Persia, many Zoroastrians fled to India and Pakistan, settling in places like Gujarat. With an estimated 2.6 million Zoroastrians worldwide, the Parsis are India's largest single group.

Significance of Parsi New Year

Zoroastrians in numerous Middle Eastern countries, notably Iran, used the Bastnai/Fasli Calendar to commemorate the Persian New Year, which marks the beginning of the year on the Spring Equinox. Navroz is a major event celebrated by many people and cultures in Persia, even if they are not Zoroastrians.

How it is celebrated?

Parsis clean their homes, decorate them with flowers and rangoli, and invite friends to the celebrations of Parsi New Year. After breakfast, the Parsi community goes to the Fire Temple dressed in traditional Parsi attire. They do Jashan, a prayer in which they express gratitude to the Lord, request forgiveness, and hope for prosperity. In addition, individuals also mark the Parsi New year by making philanthropic contributions on this day.
