About Sarla Thukral
Thukral was born on August 8, 1914, in Delhi, British India. She later relocated to Lahore in modern-day Pakistan. Sarla Thukral began training to follow in the footsteps of her husband, an airmail pilot from a family of fliers. Sarla Thukral, 21, donned a traditional sari and climbed into the cockpit of a small, double-winged plane for her first solo flight. The news quickly spread in the newspapers that men were no longer the only ones who could fly.
Sarla Thukral's rise did not end with her first accomplishment. Thukral completed 1,000 hours of flight time as a student at the Lahore Flying Club to earn her A License, which was also a first for an Indian woman. Later that year, she began training to become a commercial pilot, but World War II halted civil aviation training. Later, she studied fine arts and painting at Lahore's Mayo School of Arts (now known as the National College of Arts). She later returned to her hometown of Delhi. She continued to paint there while also establishing a successful career in designing clothing and jewellery.
