West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the state government is considering reopening schools and colleges in the state that have been closed since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chief Minister of the State added that educational institutions in the state can resume work after the Durga Puja vacation, and initially the classes will be held every other day.
The Chief Minister's announcement came just days after a senior Department of Education official said the government had no plans to reopen schools of any level in the near future as the third wave of COVID-19 was imminent.
A Department of Education spokesman responded to questions about ICMR CEO Balram Bhargava's statement that schools should be reopened with an elementary division as children can carry the viral infection better than adults. The department also added that whenever school campuses reopen, high school students will be the first to start autonomous classes.
The head of ICMR said that in order to open schools, it is necessary to ensure the vaccination of teachers and other support staff. The West Bengal Department of Education recently released an overall score for students who were previously considered failing in class XII exams. The results were announced following huge student protests over the delayed announcement of exams.
