Description

On August 5, 2021, the Indian men's hockey team made history by winning the bronze medal after a stunning 5-4 victory over Germany in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. After 41 years, the team has brought home India's first Olympic medal in hockey.

Germany took an early lead in the first quarter of the bronze medal match, but India quickly equalized. Germany then scored two goals in the second quarter to increase its lead to 3-1. Team India tied the game at 3-3 at halftime thanks to the goals of Hardik Singh and Harmanpreet Singh. Rupinder Pal Singh and Simranjeet Singh scored for India to take a 5-3 lead. India led the thriller from start to finish, claiming bronze. Despite scoring another goal and bringing in an extra field player in place of its goalie, Germany was unable to score an equalizer.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik are among the dignitaries who took to Twitter and congratulated the TEAM!

Why is this victory significant?

The Indian men's hockey team has simply been fantastic throughout the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, losing only once in the group stage to Australia and then in the semifinals to Belgium. The team put up a strong performance throughout, which helped them win the bronze medal with another spectacular victory. The victory is extremely significant as it indicates the revival of field hockey in the country, after 41 years.

The Indian hockey team had not fared well in recent decades, with performances drying up. Since winning gold almost every time in the Summer Olympics between 1950 and 1980, the men's field hockey team has failed to win a single Olympic medal. The period following India's Olympic success saw a decline in performance, and the subsequent decades proved to be full of ups and downs for the national team. However, there was a resurgence in 1998, and the team has been attempting to rebuild itself ever since.

Due to the tireless efforts of the team led by captain Manpreet Singh, the recent bronze medal victory over Germany has brought back a glimpse of the old glory and dominance. Between 1928 and 1964, the Indian field hockey team won seven Olympic gold medals, with the exception of a silver medal in 1960 final. India won the gold medal again in 1980 but has not won it since.

Overall, this was India's 12th Olympic medal in hockey. This makes India the most successful team in men's hockey at the Olympics, followed by Germany, which has won 11 medals, Australia, which has won 9, and the Netherlands, which has also won 9 medals.
