The Kuthiran tunnel on the Thrissur-Palakkad highway, Kerala's first twin road tunnel, opened for traffic on July 31, 2021. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced it in a tweet. The 1.6-kilometer-long tunnel built through the Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary will improve connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, as well as Coimbatore and Kochi. Each tunnel measures 964 meters in length.

The tunnel is located on Kuthiran in the mountainous terrain on the Mannuthy-Wadakkanchery stretch of the Thrissur-Palakkad highway, which is prone to accidents. Work on the Mannuthy-Wadakkanchery six-lane stretch began in 2010, and the construction of the Kuthiran tunnel began in the year 2016.
How Kuthiran tunnel will benefit?
The Kuthiran tunnel will improve Kerala's transportation infrastructure. During an accident, the Mannuthy-Wadakkanchery stretch of the Thrissur-Palakkad highway, which is highly accident-prone, is subjected to traffic ordeals. The tunnel will also improve connectivity to key towns and ports along the North-South Corridor without endangering wildlife. However, there is no fixed date for the completion of both tunnels. The second tunnel is nearly 70% finished. The state government will keep an eye on the situation to ensure that the second tunnel opens on time. Toll collection will begin only after the second tunnel is completed.
