PV Sindhu Wins Bronze, Becomes Second Indian to Win Two Individual Olympic Medals

Description

PV Sindhu won the bronze medal on August 1, 2021, after defeating China's He Bingjiao 21-13, 21-15 in the bronze medal match. This is historic because she is the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. Congratulations poured in from all over the country, praising the Indian shuttler's tenacity and determination in consistently delivering for India. President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur along with many other ministers took to Twitter and congratulated her and said she has is India’s pride.   

PV Sindhu is the second Indian after Sushil Kumar to win two Olympic medals. She had won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after losing in the final to Carolina Marin of Spain. Despite a strong Olympic campaign, PV Sindhu was defeated in two sets by world number one Tai Tzu Ying on July 31st. Prior to this, she did not lose a single set in this year's Olympics.

In a statement, Sindhu said after winning the bronze medal, "I'm on cloud nine. Worked hard for so many years. I think I've done really well. I had a lot of emotions going through me - should I be happy that I won bronze or sad that I lost the opportunity to play in the final?"

About PV Sindhu

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is the first Indian ever to become a world champion in badminton and she was the first Indian woman to win the Olympic silver medal in the year 2016. Her bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics makes her the first Indian woman and the second Indian athlete to win two Olympic medals. The highest world ranking in her career was world no. 2 in April 2017. Currently, she is ranked seventh in the world.

Her parents were both national-level volleyball players, and she was born in Hyderabad. Her father was a member of the Indian volleyball team that won a bronze medal at the Seoul Asian Games in 1986. In 2000, he received the Arjuna Award for his contributions to sports. She chose badminton after being inspired by the success of Pullela Gopichand, 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion.
