BJP leader Basavaraj Somappa Bommai, son of former Karnataka Chief Minister has been appointed as the chief minister of Karnataka during a meeting of the BJP Legislature Party in Bengaluru on July 27, a day after BS Yediyurappa resigned as Chief Minister of Karnataka.
During the BJP Legislative Assembly meeting, BS Yediyurappa proposed Bommai's name for the top post and it was supported by Karjol Ashok Eshwarappa and all other BJP MLAs. Basavaraj Somappa Bommai sworn in as the 23rd CM of Karnataka on July 28, 2021.
About Basavaraj Somappa Bommai
Basavaraj Bommai was born on January 28, 1960, and he is the son of the former Chief Minister of Karnataka SR Bommai who served as the 11th Chief Minister of the state.
He studied mechanical engineering and worked as an agriculturist and industrialist. Prior to entering politics, he worked at Tata Motors, Pune, and later became an industrial entrepreneur. He belongs to the Sadara Lingayat community, to which Yediyurappa also belongs. The Lingayat community, a major constituent of the BJP, represents 16-17 percent of the state's population.
