A report named ‘Renewables Integration in India 2021’ was jointly launched by NITI Aayog and IEA on July 22nd, 2021. This report builds on the results of seminars held in three states with the governments of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat to understand the energy transition challenges facing these renewable energy-rich countries. This report uses IEA modeling results to demonstrate the effects of various flexibility options on energy systems.
What does the report say?
The power system of India can effectively integrate renewable energy sources (175 GW in 2022 and 450 GW in 2030) as highlighted in the report, but this requires proper planning, resource identification, regulatory policies, and institutional support, energy savings, and advance technology initiatives.
Indian states must take advantage of options, such as the more flexible operation of coal-based power plants, grid improvements, demand response, and storage to shift to cleaner electricity systems. Time-of-use (ToU) tariffs can be an effective instrument to promote flexible consumption and stimulate demand management. This report will serve as a repository for all Indian stakeholders.
The report also mentions government measures for flexibility of thermal power plants and strengthening of transmission networks through green corridors, as well as the need for low-cost storage technology solutions. The current practice of Self Scheduling by Discom will be replaced by a market-based economic dispatch (MBED) model for optimization of economic dispositions and better capacity planning.
Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. emphasizes that the state has shifted 70% to 80% of the agricultural load per day to absorb maximum REpower while providing incentives for all industrial consumers to use more electricity and the state share is increasing in green energy trading.
The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission has stated that the old regulations need to be revised and the regulatory commission should play an active role in implementing the revised regulations in the state.
Sh. Rajnath Ram, Adviser (Energy) concluded this meeting by stating that NITI Aayog looks forward to providing support to the state governments in order to support their development plan for affordable, clean, and secure power systems for the future.
