Haryana government announced that India’s first Grain ATM ‘Annapurti’ has been set up as a pilot project in Farrukhnagar, Gurugram on July 14, 2021.
Dushyant Chautala, Deputy Chief Minister of Harayana who also owns a portfolio of Food and Civil Supplies said that the purpose of installing this is to ensure the right quantity gets to the right recipient with minimal fuss.
Complaints regarding the correct ration quantity size and waiting time are processed by these Grain ATMs. With the successful installation of this machine at Farrukhnagar in Gurugram, the Haryana government plans to install these ATMs in their landfills across the country, he added.
What is a Grain ATM?
Grain ATM is known as a multi-component automatic grain measuring machine. It works like a regular ATM or vending machine. It is installed as a pilot project as part of the ‘World Food Programme’ of the United Nations (UN). This machine can distribute up to 70 kg in 7 minutes. Three types of grains are distributed - rice, millet, and wheat. Gurugram's grain ATM is currently ready to distribute wheat.
How does India’s ‘Grain ATM’ function?
Grain ATM is equipped with a biometric system and a touch screen. Recipients have to enter their ration number or Aadhar card number to access it. After successful biometric authentication, the device distributes the grains into a bag mounted under the device.

Grain ATMs help in the consideration of complaints regarding the accuracy of measuring the number of rations and waiting times. It will end the complaints about a lack of grain in state landfills. Also, it will increase transparency in the public distribution system. It will save time by distributing grains to state landfill operators.
