What is a Grain ATM?

Grain ATM is known as a multi-component automatic grain measuring machine. It works like a regular ATM or vending machine. It is installed as a pilot project as part of the ‘World Food Programme’ of the United Nations (UN). This machine can distribute up to 70 kg in 7 minutes. Three types of grains are distributed - rice, millet, and wheat. Gurugram's grain ATM is currently ready to distribute wheat.

How does India’s ‘Grain ATM’ function?

Grain ATM is equipped with a biometric system and a touch screen. Recipients have to enter their ration number or Aadhar card number to access it. After successful biometric authentication, the device distributes the grains into a bag mounted under the device.

The Benefits of India’s ‘Grain ATM’

Also, it will increase transparency in the public distribution system. It will save time by distributing grains to state landfill operators.
