The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully tested an extended range Pinaka missile. A test fire was conducted at the Integrated Test Site (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha on 25 June. DRDO fired 25 improved Pinaka missiles at targets at various ranges.
Rockets of caliber 122 mm were launched using a multi-barreled rocket launcher (MBRL). To check the accuracy of the missiles hitting the target, all flying objects were tracked by various rangefinders.
On the improved Pinaka rocket system
The Pinaka extended-range missile system was developed by the Arms Research and Development Center (ARDE) in Pune in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL). They received production support from Economic Explosives Limited, Nagpur. Advanced systems can destroy targets held at distances of up to 45 kilometers. These systems were designed to increase the range.
About Pinak
This is a domestic multi-barreled rocket launch system. It was developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for the Indian Army. Its weapon system consists of an ultra-modern guidance kit, complemented by a modern navigation and control system. The navigation system of this rocket is assisted by the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The initial version of the weapon system was called the Mark I and had a range of 40 km. This range was increased to 70-80 km in the upgraded Pinaka Mark II missile.
