West Bengal Cabinet of Ministers approved the "Student Credit Card Scheme" on June 24, 2021. Trinamool Congress has promised to launch this scheme in its campaign manifesto. This scheme will be implemented and launched on June 30, 2021. Under this scheme, a student can obtain a concessional loan of up to 10 lakhs with a credit card for higher education. Loans will be provided for higher education in India as well as overseas. Loans will be issued at 4% per annum. The state government will act as guarantor.
Eligibility for loan
Anyone who has spent 10 years in West Bengal can avail a loan under this scheme. The loan will be available to undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and doctoral students. One person is eligible to receive a loan under the scheme for up to 40 years.
How can you repay loans?
Students will be given fifteen years to pay off the loan after they take a job. A similar scheme is used by the Bihar government. The Government of Bihar launched the Student Credit Card Program on October 2, 2016. Under this scheme, the state government provides an interest-free loan of up to Rs 4,000 to poor 12th class students in Bihar state for higher education. It was launched to help poorly educated students in Bihar who want to pursue higher education. Loans are available only to those students who permanently reside in Bihar.
