China will run the first electric train in a remote region of the Himalayas of Tibet. The electric train will connect the provincial capital of Lhasa with Nyingchi. The 435.5 km section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be inaugurated ahead of the 100th anniversary of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on July 1, 2021. Nyingchi is a strategically located Tibetan border town near Arunachal Pradesh. The power transmission process has been completed and tested.
China claims that Arunachal Pradesh is part of Southern Tibet. This claim has been rejected by India. Thus, China launched a project to strengthen its base near the region.
Sichuan-Tibet Railway
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway is a high-altitude railway under construction. It will connect Chengdu (capital of Sichuan province) and Lhasa (capital of Tibet Autonomous Region). This is a 1,629 km line that will cut the travel time from Chengdu to Lhasa from 48 to 13 hours. This will be the second railway to Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It will pass southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which is one of the most geologically active regions in the world.
Three railway sections
The first segment of the railway called Chengdu-Ya'an was commissioned on December 28, 2018. The second segment of the railway, called Nyingchi-Lhasa, will open on June 25, 2021. The last segment, called Ya'an Nyingchi, is expected to be completed in 2030.
