The Delhi government announced that the former Olympic weightlifting champion Karnam Malleswari has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of the upcoming Delhi Sports University. The announcement was made after a meeting held between chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Dy CM deputy Manish Sisodia and Malleswari, which was celebrated as International Olympics Day. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Our dream of launching Delhi Sports University is coming true. It gives me great pride that Olympic medallist Karnam Malleswari is going to be the primary Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Sports University. We discussed the vision of Delhi Sports University today.” Ms. Malleswari is the first woman who has won a medal for India at the Olympics.

Currently, Karnam Malleswari is working as Chief general manager within the FCI. She was awarded some prestigious awards like Arjuna Award in 1994, Padma Shri Award in 1999and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1999. She has also won many international medals, including two gold and two silver in World Championship in 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996 respectively.

Malleswari announced retirement at the Athens 2004 Olympics after failing to win a medal. She had won bronze in weightlifting at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and her record remains intact as no woman from India won a medal in weightlifting at Olympics. Malleswari made history at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 by lifting 130 kgs and 100 kgs within the snatch and clean & jerk categories.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the aim of building DSU is to create and make athletes who will make “our nation proud”. He added that the Delhi government is trying to make an environment where sports flourish and sportspersons are often trained to a level where they bring “at least 50 medals each year” and therefore the Capital can host the Olympics in 2048.

Mr. Sisodia further added, “The intention of building a world-class sports university isn't to get jobs but to supply an area for people to build their athletic talent. Through the university, we would like to nurture and foster talent so that we will say a minimum of 50 Olympians are proud alumni of Delhi Sports University." He also mentioned that the construction work on the university has been stopped due to the pandemic and has not started yet.

In 2019, Delhi Assembly passed a Bill to set up the DSU. It mentioned that it would offer graduation, postgraduation, and doctorate degrees in cricket, football, and hockey as well as other sports. DSU is planned to set up to create world-class athletes for world-class competitions.
