India has decided to open-source the CoWIN platform to other countries so that they can use the technology to run their own vaccination campaigns. Countries including Vietnam, Iraq, Peru, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Nigeria, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates and Uganda have expressed interest in exploring CoWIN technology to launch their vaccination programs.
Co-WIN app
Co-WIN is a digital platform that has helped implement a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination program in India. It is also called the COVID Vaccine Intelligence Network. This cloud-based IT platform has to handle the smallest details regarding the Indian Covid-19 immunization program. It includes registering beneficiaries, distributing vaccination centers, sending text messages with the name of their vaccinator and monitoring vials stored in the refrigerator in real time.
Who developed the platform?
The Co-WIN platform is owned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This platform has previously been used for pulsed polio vaccination and other important immunization programs in India. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the National Center for Informatics maintain the back end.
