Description

Date - 24th Jun 2021

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the first all-party meeting with 14 prominent leaders from Jammu and Kashmir to discuss the current situation in the union territory today, June 24, 2021, in New Delhi. The Prime Minister is expected to discuss with political leaders a further course of action on the union territory. The 14 leaders who were invited to the meeting belong to various major J&K political parties.

This is the first interaction between the center and the political leadership of Jammu and Kashmir at a high level after August 5, 2019, when the Center abolished Article 370, which gave J&K a special status and divided the state into two union territories. The center also stripped J&K of state status and declared it a union territory.

Leaders who will attend the meeting include -

1. Congress Leaders: Gulam Nabi Azad, Tara Chand and G.A. Peace

2. National Conference Leaders: Dr. Farouk Abdullah and Omar Abdullah

3. Chief Mufti of the NDP Mehbuba

4. JK Apni party leader Altaf Bukhari

5. Sajjad Ghani Lone of the Peoples Conference

6. Head of the National Panthers Party Professor Bhim Singh

7. M Y Tarigami from CPI (M)

8. BJP Leaders: Ravinder Raina, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta

9. Other leaders: Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Interior Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and Interior Minister J&K.

It is reported that the meeting does not have a fixed agenda and free discussion is expected. Jammu and Kashmiri Congress President Ghulam Ahmad Mir confirmed that there is no agenda for the all-party meeting and that they were told that it would be an open and free debate. Delimitation process in J&K.

Points to be discussed

Delimitation process is underway in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Delimitation is the act of changing the boundaries of the Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in a state / UT that has a legislature, according to the Electoral Commission. It is expected that the conditions for the delimitation will be discussed during the meeting.

Assembly elections Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on the occasion of Independence Day for the last time that assembly elections will be held in J&K following the completion of the delimitation process. Consequently, the holding of assembly elections in J&K can be one of the key issues that can be discussed in an all-party assembly.

Restoring Statehood Most J&K political leaders are expected to raise negotiations to reinstate Articles 370 and 35 A. NDP chief Mehbuba Mufti said earlier this week that she would raise the issue of restoring J&K's special status during a party-wide meeting. She said that peace in the region could not be restored without repealing the "illegal" and "unconstitutional" act to revoke the special status of the former state of J&K.

Why is this meeting important?

This is the first interaction between the J&K political leadership and the prime minister. In fact, the relationship did not get off to a good start, as most of J&K's top executives were put in preventive detention by the center before it overturned Article 370 in the former J&K state, including former chief ministers Dr. Farouk Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and NDP chief Mehbuba. Mufti.

Therefore, this first meeting with the center could mark the beginning of a new friendship start for J&K. All political leaders had previously welcomed the meeting and agreed to meet with the prime minister, including Mufti Mahbub. However, most of them stated that they would contact the center with a request to reinstate Articles 370 and 35 A.

President of the National Panther Party of Jammu and Kashmir Bhim Singh said:

“I am here because I have been invited (to join the All-Party Meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi). The statehood of Jammu and Kashmir must be restored. "

The head of the Apni party, Sayed Altaf Bukhari, welcomed the all-party meeting with Prime Minister Modi and said he considered it a positive development.

“The Prime Minister started the process on March 14, 2020, when he was greeted by a delegation from the Apni Party, and he has now called an all-party meeting. This is a welcome step.”
