The Union government approved PMGKY 4.0 to allocate additional food grains for the next five-month period from July 2021 to November 2021. Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana Phase IV will be launched from July 2021 to November 2021 give 5 kg per person per month.
The fourth phase of the scheme will reach 81.35 million beneficiaries who are subject to the National Food Security Act (NFSA), Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Households. It will also benefit those covered by Direct Benefit Payments (DBT). Additional food grains will be authorized with a subsidy of Rs 64,031.
The Government of India bears all costs without any contribution from the states or UT. An additional cost of Rs 3,234.85 crores will be required to cover shipping and handling profits and to cover the profits of FPS dealers. This brings the total estimated spending of the Government of India to Rs 67,266.44 crores.
Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY)
PMGKAY was launched as part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan (PMGKY) package to help the underdog in the fight against COVID-19. It was launched by the Ministry of Finance. The scheme was originally announced for a three-month period, that is, April, May, and June 2020. It covered RUR 80 crore cardholders. It was later extended until November 2020. The scheme was resumed in April 2021 following the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
