Description

Date - 23rd Jun 2021

The World Testing Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand will be extended to day six after 2 full days - Day 1 and Day 4 - were washed out by rain. Other days also suffered from rain and poor lighting in Southampton, UK. According to a press release from the International Cricket Council (ICC), it has been confirmed that the reserve day will be used in the 2021 ICC Testing World Cup final.

A reserve day for the WTC Finals is scheduled for June 23, 2021, to catch up during the five scheduled playing days between India and New Zealand. The ICC WTC Championship Final will take place from June 18 to 22, 2021 in England between India and New Zealand.

What is a Reserve Day? Why the WTC is final scheduled?

According to the International Cricket Board, the reserve day has been scheduled to provide five full playing days and will only be used if lost playing time cannot be recovered by teams through the normal provisions for making up lost time every day. However, the council added that there will be no additional playing days unless a positive result is achieved after five full playing days and the match is declared a draw.

When was the Reserve Day introduced?

The decision to allocate a reserve day or extra day was made prior to the start of the 2018 ICC Test World Championship. This day was further confirmed in the publication of the official game conditions on May 28, 2021. The match between India and New Zealand will kick off on Day 6 (Reserve Day) of the World Testing Championship Finals at 10.30 BST (15.00 IST) at the Ageas Bowl. A total of 98 overs will be available per day.

According to the ICC, the referees will signal the start of the last hour of play on the Reserve Day. The maximum reserve day is at least 330 minutes (or 83 overs, whichever comes later) plus the last hour.

If a match is paused for any reason other than the normal intervals before the start of the last hour, the playing time will be increased by the total lost time up to the amount of overtime available. COVID-19 regulations and bandwidth restrictions will also remain in effect throughout the Reserve Day.

Reserve day: what if the match ends in a draw or a draw?

In the official announcement of the International Cricket Council, it is said that in the event that a match on the Reserve Day ends in a draw or a draw, after the specified total time has elapsed, the teams will be declared the winners of the ICC World Testing Championship final in 2021.
