The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a report on suicides worldwide in 2019. The report concludes that reducing the global suicide mortality rate by a third is an indicator as well as a goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But the world will not be able to achieve this goal.
So far, only 38 countries have a national suicide prevention strategy. The suicide crisis already took place in 2019. About 7, 03,000 people (one in 100) died from suicide in 2019. In 2019, the global age-standardized suicide rate was 9.0 per 100,000 population.
Suicides in India
India has the highest suicide rate in the Southeast Asia region, according to a WHO report. The National Bureau of Crime Data shows that there were about 1,34,516 suicides recorded in 2018. The suicide rate was 9.9 in 2017 and increased to 10.2 in 2018.
