The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant or B.1.617.2 as a variant of concern (VoC) on May 11, 2021. The Delta variant was first spotted in India in October 2020. The Delta variant is largely responsible for fueling the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in India. In 2021, the highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant or B.1.617.2 mutated into a new COVID-19 variant, Delta Plus variant or AY.1.
About Delta Plus SARS-CoV-2 Variant
The SARS-CoV-2 Delta Plus or AY.1 variant is a new COVID-19 variant that mutated from the Delta variant. The Delta Plus variant is characterized by the K417N mutant found in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The Delta Plus variant was found to be resistant to treatment with the COVID-19 monoclonal antibody cocktail. The SARS-CoV-2 Delta Plus variant was first discovered in Europe in March 2021.
About the Delta variant
The delta or variant B.1.617.2 SARS-CoV-2, first discovered in India, has been declared a concern by the World Health Organization (WHO). Maharashtra reported the first examples of the Delta variant.
Since then, WHO has reported the emergence of the Delta variant in 75 countries, of which the United Kingdom has seen a sharp increase in Delta cases from 10 percent to 30 percent over the past week.
Is the Delta variant more dangerous than the previous variants?
Experts have found that the Delta variant is more contagious than the Alpha variant, which was first discovered in the UK. Experts said the Alpha variant has a thermal conductivity coefficient of about 43-90% higher than previous variants. However, it was found that the Delta variant is 40 percent more gear than the Alpha variant.
Vaccine protection
The Delta Plus variant was found to be resistant to treatment with the COVID-19 monoclonal antibody cocktail. According to the Lancet study, vaccines against the Delta variant were less effective, especially with just one dose.
COVID-19 experts are also concerned that vaccines like COVISHIELD in India and the AstraZeneca vaccine will only be 60 percent effective against the Delta variant.
