A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in agriculture and related sectors was signed between Trade Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Sri Narendra Singh Tomar and Fiji Minister of Agriculture, Waterways and Environment Dr. Mahendra Reddy.

India and Fiji have warm and friendly relations based on mutual respect, cooperation and strong cultural and interpersonal ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Fiji and the first India-Pacific Cooperation Forum has given new impetus to India's engagement with Fiji and the Pacific.

In particular, the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding will further strengthen the multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.

Food and agriculture are closely linked to climate change. Both countries are collaborating to tackle global agricultural challenges. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, India has distributed about 7 tons of seeds from 14 varieties of fruits and vegetables in Fiji as a grant to restore the livelihoods of communities affected by Cyclone Yasa.

Memorandum of Understanding

The Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries provides for cooperation in the areas of dairy industry development, root crop diversification, rice industry development, water management, food industry development, coconut industry development, agricultural mechanization, animal husbandry, agricultural research, horticultural development, pest control. And disease, cultivation, value adding and marketing, post-harvest and chopping, breeding and agronomy.

The MOU will be implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare of India and the Ministry of Agriculture of Fiji. A joint working group will also be set up to define procedures. The Memorandum of Understanding will be valid for five years.
