The Rubber Board has begun field trials of the world's first GM (genetically modified) rubber in Assam. GM Rubber was developed at the Biotechnology Laboratory of the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) in Puthuppalli, Kottayam.
It was planted at the Sarutari Rubber Board Research Farm in Guwahati. The Rubber Board began field trials of GM Rubber in Assam ten years after the Kerala government denied permission to do the same due to its adverse environmental impact.
GM Rubber is the second genetically modified crop to be field-tested after Bt. Cotton. The Genetic Engineering Assessment Committee (GEAC) authorized the commencement of field trials of GM rubber in 2010 at Chetchakal, Tombikand, Kottayam.
The meaning of GM Rubber
The rubber of the GM variant is able to withstand adverse climatic conditions. This will give a big boost to the rubber industry in India. Once the trials are completed, it will be of immense benefit to the farmers. The crop is resistant to low humidity or drought, low and high temperatures, as well as high light intensity. It will also shorten the rubber maturation period. This will lead to early yields.
Rubber overgrowth problem
Growth of young rubbers slows down during the winter season in the northeast because the plants don't get enough light during the rainy season. The lack of sufficient water during the summer season also creates stress on the plants. Thus, GM rubber can solve these problems and lead to faster growth.
