The UN Committee has recommended adding the Great Barrier Reef to the list of “In danger” World Heritage Sites. However, this recommendation is opposed by Australia, which blames political interference.
The recommendation was made by a committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This committee is part of UNESCO. According to the committee, the world's largest coral reef system should be added to the list of “endangered” due to the impact of climate change.
Australia has been fighting for four years to keep the Great Barrier Reef out of "danger." In 2015, UNESCO noted that the prospects for this reef are poor. However, he kept the status of the site unchanged. Since 2015, the Great Barrier Reef has experienced three major coral bleaching events due to intense sea heat.
