About Laurel Hubbard
Hubbard is a New Zealand weightlifter selected to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics. She will be the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympics after a gender reassignment. Prior to gender reassignment, Hubbard set New Zealand junior records in 1998 in the newly created M105 + division in the 135kg snatch, 170kg clean and jerk. However, later these records were surpassed by David Lee. Hubbard turned into a woman and in 2012 became Laurel Hubbard. She won a silver medal at the 2017 World Cup and gold at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa. She also competed in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, but a serious injury prevented her career.
Hubbard has been eligible to compete in the Olympic Games since 2015. The International Olympic Committee issued guidelines allowing any transgender athlete to compete as a woman, provided their testosterone levels are below 10 Nano moles per liter for a minimum of 12 months before entering the first competition.
