Researchers at the Guwahati Indian Institute of Technology have found a way to improve water management policies in India through virtual water analysis. This study was conducted by IIT-Guwahati Professor Anamika Barua.
The concept of virtual water was first conceived in the 1990s to understand how water-stressed countries can provide people with basic necessities such as water-intensive products, including food, clothing, and shelter. According to the professor, Virtual Water (VW) is water used in the production and trade of food and non-food products and services.
Virtual water is that "invisible" water that has been consumed throughout the entire life cycle of a product or service.
Virtual water analysis
The findings from the IIT Guwahati study will help fill the knowledge management gap for water scarcity mitigation in the assessment of virtual water flows. In states with chronic water stress, planning and implementing sustainable agriculture is critical to achieving water and food security, according to the study. The study found that pressure on freshwater resources in dry-water countries can be reduced by diversifying production areas using virtual water flow analysis to produce food-grade crops.
Purpose of the assessment of virtual water flows
The assessment is carried out with the aim of promoting sustainable use that can lead to water security. It will also bridge the gap between science and policy regarding water scarcity by analyzing water flows hidden in agricultural products that move through the states of India. It can also assist in developing evidence-based water policies and linking hydrological, economic and institutional dimensions of water scarcity.
