India's State of the Environment 2021 Report, published on June 6, 2021 by the Center for Science and the Environment (CSE), showed India's ranking dropped two places from last year to 117th out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) taken as part. The 2030 Agenda by the 193 Member States of the United Nations in 2015.

India ranked 115th last year and dropped two spots this year due to core SDGs that remain outstanding in the country, such as SDG 2: Zero Hunger and Achieve Food Security, SDG 5: Achieve Gender Equality and SDG 9: Building a sustainable infrastructure. Promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and stimulating innovation.

The report also states that India's overall SDG score is 61.9 out of 100, and it is below four countries in South Asia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

The report also mentions that Bihar and Jharkhand are the least prepared states in the country to achieve the SDGs by 2030, the target year. Bihar lags behind in seven SDGs and Jharkhand in five. Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala are the states / UT with the best overall scores that are on track to achieve the SDGs.

Environmental Performance Index (EPI)

India was ranked 168th out of 180 countries according to the Yale University Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2020 report. EPI is calculated based on metrics such as biodiversity, sanitation and drinking water, air pollution, climate, environmental health, ecosystem services, etc.

India is ranked 172 in the EPI's environmental health rankings, which indicates how well a country protects its population from environmental health risks. India was ranked 148th and Pakistan 127th in the biodiversity and habitats category, an indicator for assessing actions countries are taking to protect biodiversity and preserve natural ecosystems.

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

In 2015, the Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is a blueprint for ensuring prosperity and peace for plants and people, now and in the future.

The 2030 Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. 17 SDGs:

SDG 1: No Poverty

SDG 2: End hunger

SDG 3: Stronger health and well-being

SDG 4: Quality Education

SDG 5: Gender Equality

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

SDG 10: Reduce inequality

SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

SDG 13: Climate Action

SDG 14: Life underwater

SDG 15: Life on land

SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

SDG 17: Partnerships to Achieve the Goals
