Description

Date - 21st Jun 2021

June 21, 2021, will mark the longest day of 2021 in the Northern Hemisphere, also known as the Summer Solstice. The day, which marks the beginning of the summer solstice in the north, brings the first longest day of summer and the shortest night in the Northern Hemisphere.

About summer solstice

The summer solstice is a phenomenon that occurs when the Sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer or at 23.5 degrees north latitude. When the North Pole is more toward the sun, the summer solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere between March and September.

The day of the beginning of the summer solstice may differ by a day or two. In 2019, the summer solstice was celebrated on June 21, 2021.

What is the Science behind Summer Solstice Science?

The Earth's axis of rotation is not at right angles to the planet's orbital trajectory around the Sun. The axis of our planet, around which it revolves, is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees vertically in accordance with the Sun. This means that the North and South poles of our planet are also tilted.

When the North Pole is facing the Sun, there is a summer solstice between March and September in the Northern Hemisphere. Whereas, when the North Pole tilts further from the Sun in the second half of the year, the Winter Solstice occurs in the Northern Hemisphere.

During the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, the days light up for a very long time. In fact, the further north you go, for example, inside the Circle of Articles, within 25 degrees of the North Pole, you will see that the Sun never sets on the summer solstice. Daylight hours at this time of the year in the north of the Arctic Circle are up to six months. The solstices in the Southern Hemisphere are reversed. The summer solstice occurs at the end of December and the winter solstice at the end of June.

Summer solstice in India

The latitude of the location on the map will determine the amount of light that a particular area will receive in the northern hemisphere during the summer solstice. The further north you are from the equator, the longer the daylight hours during the summer solstice.

June 21 New Delhi will have 13 hours 58 minutes of daylight hours with sunrise at 5.23 AM and sunset at 7:21 PM.

Moving down south, Mumbai will receive slightly less daylight. The day will be 13 hours 16 minutes with sunrise at 6.02 AM and sunset at 7.18 PM.

As it approaches the equator, Chennai will receive its lowest hours of daylight at 12 hours 53 minutes. Sunrise will be at 5:43 AM and sunset at 06:37 PM.
