The estimated cost of the first phase of the Deep Ocean Mission for three years will be Rs. Rs 2823.

Mission & Goals

The mission will assist India in the exploration and production of strategic polymetallic nodules such as nickel, copper, manganese and cobalt in an area of ??75,000 km in the central Indian Ocean Basin. It will also help place India in the category of a select group of countries, including China, USA, Germany, Japan and Canada, in deep sea oceanographic research.

Six components of the Deep Ocean Mission

  • Development of technologies for deep-sea development and manned underwater operations.
  • Development of advisory services on climate change in the ocean
  • Technological innovation for the exploration and conservation of deep sea biodiversity.
  • Deep sea exploration and ocean exploration
  • Marine energy and fresh water from the ocean
  • Advanced Marine Station for Ocean Biology Research

Development of manned underwater vehicles:

The mission will develop a manned underwater vehicle to transport three people to a depth of 6,000 meters in the ocean with a set of scientific sensors and instruments. It will be developed to mine polymetallic nodules at a depth of 6,000 meters in the central Indian Ocean.

Mineral exploration will pave the way for commercial exploitation in the near future when the International Seabed Authority develops a code of commercial exploitation. This component will also help the Blue Economy priority area to develop and explore deep sea minerals and energy.
