Description

Date - 17th Jun 2021

A case of Green fungus infection was found in a 34-year-old COVID-19 survivor in Madhya Pradesh. The patient was taken to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai for treatment. The COVID patient has been treated at Aurobindo Hospital in Indore for the past month and a half. He recovered from COVID, then again had a high fever and nosebleeds.

During the diagnosis, he was found to have a green fungus in the sinuses, lungs, and blood. His lungs were found to be 90 percent infected. A fungal infection is different from mucormycosis or black fungus. This may be the first reported case of green fungus in the country, although the medical community is unsure in other parts of India.

About green fungus

Green fungus, also known as aspergillosis, is an infection caused by Aspergillus, a common indoor and outdoor mold. People can contract aspergillosis by inhaling microscopic Aspergillus spores from the environment.

The first case of green fungus was discovered when a COVID-19 patient was tested on suspicion that he had contracted mucormycosis or black fungus.

Symptoms of green fungus

According to the US CDC, different types of aspergillosis can cause different symptoms. A couple of them include -

Fever, shortness of breath, dyspnea, cough and fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, decreased sense of smell, expulsion of blood, weight loss, fatigue

Prevention

  • According to doctors, rare fungal infections can be prevented by practicing hygiene and keeping your mouth clean and physically clean.
  • Those at high risk should avoid areas with a lot of dust and stored contaminated water and avoid activities involving close contact with soil and dust.
  • People should continue to wash their face and hands with soapy water if they come into contact with soil or dust.
  • More research is needed on whether the nature of the green fungus infection in people who have recovered from Covid-19 is different from other patients.
