China successfully launched the first crew of three to its new space station as part of its first man mission in five years. China's last man space flight was launched in 2016. The three astronauts are traveling in the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft, which was launched by the Long March-2F Y12 rocket. It launched shortly after 9:22 AM from the Jiuquan Cosmodrome in northwest China.
Shenzhou 12, which means "Divine Vessel," will be the third of 11 missions required to complete China's space station by 2022. Among them, 4 will be missions with people on board, potentially launching up to 12 Chinese astronauts into space more than 11 men and women sent by the country since 2003.
Two veteran astronauts and one newcomer will travel to Tianhe Station for three months in its main living quarters. The astronauts will conduct experiments, test equipment, carry out maintenance, and prepare the station to receive two additional modules in 2022.
