A New Variant Coronavirus Named Delta Plus
Date - 16th Jun 2021
Recently, the WHO has labeled the B.1.617.2 coronavirus strain as a "delta variant", which has now undergone further mutations. The mutated form of the Delta variant is referred to as the Delta Plus variant or AY.1 variant. The Delta variant has been identified as one of the contributors to the second wave of coronavirus infection in India.
Initial data show that the Delta plus variant is resistant to treatment with a cocktail of monoclonal antibodies recently approved by the Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) for the treatment of COVID-19.
Delta Plus Variant
Variant B.1.617.2.1 of the coronavirus is known as AY.1, which is characterized by the acquisition of the K417N mutation. The delta plus variant has been identified in six genomes in India to date. The health agency also confirmed the presence of 63 genomes of the Delta variant with the new K417N mutation. However, there is no immediate cause for concern as the prevalence of the Delta Plus variant in India is still low.
