Date - 16th Jun 2021
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is on track to achieve its national commitment to neutralize land degradation, delivering a keynote speech at the UN High Level Dialogue on Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought on June 14, 2021 via videoconference. The Prime Minister spoke at the opening phase of the dialogue as President of the 14th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Prime Minister Modi called land a fundamental building block to support all lives and livelihoods and called for a reduction in the enormous pressure on land and its resources. He stated that there is a lot of work ahead of us, but it can be done together. The Prime Minister also said that India has taken the lead in raising awareness of land degradation issues in international forums. He also listed the steps India has taken to address land degradation:
India has added about 3 million hectares of forest cover over the past 10 years. This has increased the total forest cover to almost one fourth of the country's total area. The 2019 Delhi Declaration calls for better land access and management. Particular attention was paid to gender-sensitive transformation projects.
Prime Minister Modi also said that India is on track to achieve its national commitment to neutralize land degradation. India also aims to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030 to provide an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. India will also establish a Center of Excellence to promote a scientific approach to land degradation issues.
