Twitter’s New Interim Chief Compliance Officer

Twitter has appointed an interim Director of Compliance for India to comply with the new Indian government's IT regulations. When the new IT regulations were first introduced on May 25, 2021 Twitter India asked the government for more time to comply with the new IT regulations, while WhatsApp and Facebook appointed their respective complaints officers.
Twitter has appointed a Chief Compliance Officer after a long battle with the Indian government over new IT regulations.
India announced new IT regulations in February 2021, which were implemented on May 25. It requires tech companies in India such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Google, etc., to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer, Nodal Inspector, and Complaints Handler in India.
New IT rule for Social Media Platforms
The Government of India notified the 2021 Rules (Guidelines for Intermediaries and the Digital Media Code of Ethics) for Information Technology in February 2021. The new rules apply to social media and over-the-top (OTT) platforms. The rules were formulated in accordance with section 87 (2) of the Information Technology (IT) Act 2000. Under the new rules, a permanent grievance officer will be appointed as part of the broader grievance redress mechanism. Content on social media platforms will be actively monitored and monthly compliance reports will be provided for Indian users. Indian authorities can now query these platforms to determine the origin of any message.
