National AEFI confirmed its First Death After Vaccination
Date - 16th Jun 2021
The National AEFI (Adverse Events Following Immunisation) Panel has confirmed the first death associated with the covid-19 vaccine. A 68-year-old man developed a severe allergic reaction after being vaccinated in March, which later died. The group was formed to study the side effects of the covid-19 vaccine.
The group confirmed that the first death was due to anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction caused by poison, food, or drugs) after vaccination. The group only released vaccination data up to the first week of April and looked at vaccine-related deaths in February, March and April.
According to the group, the reported death rate was 2.7 deaths and the hospitalization rate 4.8 per million doses of vaccine administered. However, this does not mean that death or hospitalization occurred after vaccination. Correct investigation and assessment of causation can establish any connection between the two.
The group assessed 31 cases, of which 18 had an inconsistent causal relationship to vaccination, 7 cases were uncertain, 3 were vaccine-related, 1 was anxiety-related reaction, and 2 did not lend itself to classification.
What are the different reactions observed?
In the Panel's view, vaccine-related reactions were expected. Uncertain reactions are reactions that occur shortly after vaccination, but clinical trial data does not indicate that they could have been caused by the vaccine. Unclassified events are those that have been investigated but there is insufficient evidence to make a diagnosis. Random events are events reported after vaccination. However, a clear cause was found associated with such events.
