World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Know its Significance

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is celebrated annually on June 15, 2021. Awareness Day on Abuse (Verbal, Physical or Emotional) experienced by older populations around the world. This year's theme for World Awareness Day on Elder Abuse is “Access to Justice”. This day began to be celebrated in June 2006 following a request to declare June 15 a special day for the elders. However, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially recognized this day in 2011.
The meaning of the day
In 2021, this day is more relevant due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected millions of lives around the world. The pandemic is causing fear and distress in older people. In addition to the impact on their health, the pandemic makes older people vulnerable to poverty, discrimination and exclusion. In addition, the elderly population is at risk of death. The UN estimates that 66 percent of people age 70 and older have at least one underlying medical condition that puts them at an increased risk of complications from Covid-19. Older people also face age discrimination with regard to health care, triage and life-saving treatment.
