The Assam government has decided to institute its own series of annual awards, similar to the Bharat Ratna and Padma awards, which entail various benefits for the recipients. The decision to start its own civil awards was made at a meeting of the state cabinet of ministers on June 8, 2021, chaired by Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
During the meeting, the state cabinet also decided that from now on, all state government agencies will have to post photos of the president, prime minister and Gopinat Bordoloi, Assam's first chief minister.
Assam awards similar to Padma awards
The Asom Ratna Award, which was previously awarded only once every three years, will now be awarded annually to one person who has made a significant contribution to society. Three new sets of Padma Awards, namely Asom Bibhushan, Asom Bhushan and Asom Shri, will be awarded by the Assam government.
Prestigious award winners will also receive perks such as free treatment for critical illnesses, free travel on the buses of the Assam State Transportation Corporation, free accommodation in Asom Bhavans, and more.
Other awards announced by the Assam government -
From 2021, Assam will also grant a literary pension in the name of the writer Homen Borgohane on his birthday (December 7). The sports pension will be awarded in the name of the laureate Arjun Bogeswar Baruah on his birthday (September 3). The state government will also present the Artiste Award on January 17, 2021.
