The Cabinet's Security Committee is considering a proposal worth about Rs 50,000 crores for the construction of three nuclear-powered submarines to be built by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in Visakhapatnam.

India plans to modernize its naval ships by building 24 submarines, including six nuclear attack ones, which will give it a slight edge over adversaries in the Indian Ocean region and help the naval forces maintain peace in the area. The first of six conventional boats is already under construction in Mumbai as part of the Kalavati class project, and the tender for the next six with larger capacity will be announced shortly after the recent Defense Ministry clearance. India also plans to build six more conventional Project 76 submarines, but this will take a long time.
